Adultery

See also Fornication; Homosexual behavior; Sexual immorality; Lust, lustful; Cheating

Sexual intercourse outside of marriage between men and women. Although adultery usually refers to a sexual act between a married man or woman and someone else who is not his or her wife or her husband, the scriptures can also refer to unmarried people.

Sometimes the term adultery is used as a symbol of the apostasy of a country or an entire nation from the ways of the Lord (Num. 25:1-3; Jer. 3:6-10; Ezek. 16:15-59; Hos. 4).

Joseph was unwilling to commit this great evil and sin before God, Gen. 39:7-12. Thou shalt not commit adultery, Ex. 20:14. Whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart, Matthew 5:28. Neither fornicators nor adulterers will inherit the kingdom of God, 1 Cor. 6:9-10.

God will judge fornicators and adulterers, Heb. 13:4. Adultery is the most abominable of all sins except shedding innocent blood and denying the Holy Spirit, Alma 39:3-5. Those who commit adultery and do not repent will be cast out, D&C 42:23-26. Those who commit adultery in their hearts will not have the Spirit, D&C 63:14-16.
